World cup: Realise that old strategies no longer work

First, defending champions Spain were kicked out.
Now, England is out.
Japan is on the verge of losing.

And all these were once the best teams.
What is going on?
Even though I am not a fan in football, I was able to catch some parts of several football matches during my stay in Johor Bahru. One thing stood out: The best performing teams used a Special technique very similar to Blitzkrieg. Correct me if I am wrong, but I saw that Chile and Colombia had players running in front with the ball, passing to their team mates at lightning speed, before the ball was sent into the goal post. In addition, for corner kicks, I saw that the players on the attacking side missed the first time but there was always another player nearby who used the situation where the goalie was already tired or sprawled on the ground from defending the first goal to kick the ball into the goal.
